Types of Destination Weddings Mexico:
Civil/legal ceremony: This wedding type is recognized as legal in both the US and Canada. It can be combined with a religious portion to be legal.
· You must register your marriage certificate at your local city hall upon return to make it legal at home.
· You are required to be in Mexico 3 full week days before the destination wedding. Weekends are not included.
· Blood tests will be taken in the privacy of your room. Yes, they are safe! An additional fee may apply.
· You will need witness to also arrive 3 full days before the wedding with passports. If you do not have witnesses, the resorts can provide two for you (may be an additional fee). Your best man and maid of honor can still sign the papers.
Religious or symbolic: Catholic, Jewish and non denominational ceremonies are available alone or in conjunction with a civil ceremony. The only requirement is to have at least one full business day between the hotel arrival date and the ceremony date. These ceremonies are not recognized as legal in Mexico or your home country. They are a great alternative to those that want to be married at home before they travel to Mexico.
Symbolic Ceremony:
This type of ceremony is typically performed for couples already married and wishing to have a destination wedding ceremony, those thinking of a legal ceremony at a later date, or those wishing to renew vows with their loved one. A non-denominational minister performs symbolic ceremonies. Some speak English; if performed in Spanish, the ceremony will be translated into English by On-Site Wedding Coordinator.
Religious Ceremony:
Catholic or Jewish ceremonies are available alone or in conjunction with a civil ceremony. Additional fees apply and are not included in any of the packages. Religious ceremonies (performed by a priest or rabbi) require an official letter from the bride and groom’s house of worship allowing them to marry in Mexico. Catholic ceremonies also require bride and groom birth certificates, baptism certificates and confirmation certificates. These documents should be submitted three months before the wedding day. Catholic ceremonies can only be performed in a chapel in Mexico.
Official documents required at least 3 months before your wedding:
-
Birth Certificates: Birth certificate originals for the bride and groom are required, and they will not be returned to the couple. If you have never been married before, then your birth certificate in English will suffice. If you have been divorced in the past, your birth certificate must be translated into Spanish by an official translator and have an Apostille Certificate.
-
Divorce Documents: Under Mexican law, those previously married must be divorced for one full year before marrying again. A copy of the divorce decree will be required, translated into Spanish by an official translator and accompanied by an Apostille Certificate. If the divorced bride’s passport is under her maiden name, no additional documentation is needed. If the bride’s passport is under her ex-husband’s last name, she must provide a birth certificate translated into Spanish with an Apostille Certificate.
-
Deceased Former Spouse: If the bride or groom’s former spouse is deceased, then a copy of the death certificate is required. It must be translated into Spanish by an official translator and have an Apostille Certificate.
-
Legalized Wedding Certificate: You’ll need a Legalized Wedding Certificate to submit to your local City Hall. Your Mexican wedding certificate must be translated and carry the Apostille Certificate for international legal authenticity. This will take 30 to 45 working days, and cost $250.
-
Civil Registration Form: You will need to fill out the civil registration form in advance of travel, please complete, print and fax or email to your wedding coordinator.
