One of my favorite islands in French Polynesia is Manihi. It's near deserted feel makes you relax from the minute you arrive. The main hotel is the Manihi Pearl Resort.
This hotel has the best snorkeling with a reef edge right where the overwater bungalows are located. One side is the lagoon and the other side is the reef. The grounds are simply but the rooms are decorated very tastefully. The beach bungalows have an outdoor shower and netting for the bed.
They have complimentary bike use that you can us to visit around the island. A really fun thing I suggest is to take the bikes to the Runway at sunset enjoy a beautiful view. Nowhere else can you bike ride on a runway. Now they have star gazing on the runway. It gives you a chance to see the Southern Cross. The Big Dipper is visible on the horizon around 8:00pm every night.
They offer a wonderful 1 hour snorkel trip by boat for a "drift" snorkel. There are tons of fish to see so don't forget the underwater camera.
The General Manager is very hands on and is very personable. He is more than happy to help you out with anything!
InterContinental Resort & Thalasso Spa Bora Bora Countdown Begins
The new luxury hotel is still planning to open on May 1. They have built 2.4 km (about 1.5 miles) of pipe from the reef of the island to reach a depth of 915 meters (half mile).
The hotel indicates that it is the deepest ocean pipe in the world. The very cold deep-sea water is pumped through a titanium heat exchanger, which transfers the cold into the fresh water circuit that conveys into air conditioning for the hotel. This procedure will enable the hotel to save 90% of its electricity consumption. At the same time, the system helps to protect the eco-system and reinforces seawater recycling. Since the deep-sea water is known for its purity, it will also used for the hotel's Deep Ocean Spa, which will open on September 1, 2006 (in the meantime, the resort will offer spa services).
The resort is ready to welcome its first guests on May 1, and when all of the main services will be fully operational: the overwater villas, restaurants, bars, swimming pool, and boutique. Some minor work on the premises will continue during the opening stage and we can't wait to see the opening of the wedding chapel, and the Deep Ocean Spa in September. Other news about the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts: InterContinental Le Moana Bora Bora is scheduled to re-open on June 1, 2006. All of the beach bungalows, the overwater bungalows on the latest extension (located on the right of the hotel map), the swimming pool, the restaurant and the bar will be completed and ready by June 1st. The 20 overwater bungalows, which are located closest to the beach (left on the map), will also be completed. However the overwater bungalows located on the most remote part of the lagoon will still be under construction.
The hotel has taken precautions to assure the safety and peaceful atmosphere for their guest despite this inconvenience. Please check with your Preferred Tour Operator for further details or directly with the InterContinental Resorts and Hotels.
After 3 days on Moorea we headed to a lesser traveled island called Manihi. Manihi, lost in the vastness of the South Pacific, conjures up castaway dreams of a tropical isle. It is part of the Tumotu chain of islands. The land is dry and flat but the water is gorgeous.
Far from the modern world, the crystal-clear lagoon was once filled with mother-of-pearl and is the site of Tahiti's first black pearl farm. Today, Manihi is still the leading supplier for the Tahitian cultured pearl industry.
We stayed at the Manihi Pearl Resort, the largest resort on the island. Well, it is almost the only resort on the island beside a few small bread and breakfast places. The air strip is the largest structure on the island. Most locals live across the lagoon.
Our favorite activities here were watching the sharks in the lagoon, riding our bikes on the tarmac and checking out the stars. We went out one night to the runway to star gaze with the help of Cecilia, a local. She pointed out the Southern Cross and other constellations. They can even see the Big and Little Dipper just on the horizon at about 9:00pm. Even thought it was a full moon, we could still see all the stars! No city lights to interfere.
Riding bikes on the tarmac is a cool experience. It is a great place to watch the sunset too. Planes only land once a day during the daylight too so you don’t have to worry.
The premium beach bungalows have a great unobstructed view of the lagoon. You can easily walk out and see the fish without ever putting your face in the water. All beach bungalows have open bathrooms. It is hard to explain but there is no roof over part of the bathroom. Look at the picture. Overwater bungalows are right at the lagoon edge. One side has 3 foot water and the other 20 feet. Fish are plentiful here and snorkeling is a reward.
This is the island where pearls are farmed so I always suggest a visit. It is very interesting to see how they are cultivated and grown.
This island is very different from the Society Islands. It is more dry and windy. It is flat and sandy. It has less people. If you are looking for a “deserted” island feel this is the place to go!
Our second day in Tahiti we took the 10 minute flight to Moorea. The airport in Tahiti has a domestic area that is very small for flights to Moorea. Air Moorea and Air Tahiti are the same plane. Each plane only seats 10 people. My husband turned to me and asked if I knew it was this small. I asked if he wanted to pass on the trip. Enought said, we got on board. There is a 45 minute ferry you can take if you are at all fearful of small planes.
The volcanic peaks, reflected in the tranquil waters of Cook's Bay and OpunohuBay, rise like a shark's jaw from the island's basaltic base. The mountain slopes are covered with pineapple plantations, and white sand beaches border crystalline lagoons. After only a few days, you will discover that Moorea has filled you with peace, delight and a wonderful sense of happiness.
Albert transfer met us at the airport and took us to the Moorea Pearl Resort. I have met Albert on previous visits to Moorea. He practically owns the island. Everyone you meet is related to him. Across the street from the Pearl is a rental car company (Albert's). If you feel you want to see the island just rent for the day.
The Moorea Pearl Resort has the overwater bungalows, garden bungalows with plunge pool and regular hotel rooms. It is the only resort that allows 4 people in one room (their family rooms). I would recommend the overwater bungalows although they may not be as private as some on other islands.
There is a very small beach in front of the hotel and a nice pool area. Chairs are hard to get a peak time but the pool is comfortably warm. I didn't care for the view of overwater bungalows instead of the open water from the pool.
The resort does offer complimentary shuttle to most Restaurants, I found the meals at this hotel to be very expensive. Venture out to lunch or dinner. There is a grocery store within walking distance to pick up some goodies. There is also a patisserie where you can buy fresh crescents and coffee for about $12 USD.
4X4 photo safari offers some awesome views of the island and Cook's Bay. It is a half day excursion and worth the time to really see the natives and their habitat. MagicMountainhas the best views and a very scary jeep trip up to the top. The last 50 yards you have to walk. Be sure to take a backpack with suntan lotion, bug spray and water with you on ALL excursions!
Upon our arrival in Tahiti on April 1, 2006, we were greeted by Tahiti Travel Tours. This is the local ground operator that I use when I book cients on a honeymoon vacation package to Tahiti. They welcome you with flower leis. They are easy to find because they have you name on a big billboard. After you arrival they replace the voucher I give you with local vouchers. These are more detailed and have an easy to follow itinerary included.
Our first night we spent at the Radisson Plaza Resort Tahiti. This is probably the farthest hotel from the airport. I really like it because it has a black sand beach. The rooms are very nice with dark wood, king size bed and a jacuzzi. Great to relax those muscles after a long 8 hours flight from LA. Buffet breakfast is served in the Hiti Mahana restaurant. The charge was 7,800 XPF which is about $78USD.
The pool is an infinity pool with an awesome view of Moorea. It is difficult to get a lounge chair during the weekends but a week day is no problem. Be careful going down to the beach as that black sand gets much hotter than white sand!

The Moorea Pearl Resort & Spa is situated on 7.5 acres of white sand beachfront , a short drive from arrival points on the island (5 min from the airport and 10 from the boat landing) and two miles from the magnificent Cook ' s Bay. This traditional Polynesian style hotel offers 95 rooms and bungalows. It features 28 Over Water Bungalows, 9 Beach Bungalows, 28 Garden Bungalows and 30 Garden Rooms & Family Rooms.
Ask me about my recent trip to Tahiti and this resort.
You'll find the joy of living in the moment where every day is pure pleasure a delightful reality aboard the Paul Gauguin, where we offer you an environment conducive to unlimited happiness. And so you may fill your days as much or as little as you wish. A variety of usual and unusual activities are available to you.
Sailing on seven night voyages from Papeete, the M/S Paul Gauguin visits five idyllic islands which the artist celebrated over and over again in his paintings. This remarkable vessel is an extension of the informal, relaxing environment of Polynesia, where the constraints of formal wear, tuxedos and ties are forgotten and the only dress code is relaxation.
The Paul Gauguin was designed specifically for sailing French Polynesia year-round. She offers an extension of the informal, relaxing environment of the islands, with Radisson Seven Seas' interpretation of six-star service, comfort and luxury.
It is quite expensive in Tahiti for meals. For example, Breakfast is about $25 per person, $30 for Lunch and about $50-$60 for Dinner. Suprisingly, wine is not that expensive and sometimes cheaper by the glass than it is in the states.
I recommend you purchase meal plans on most islands, except in Moorea. There are so many Restaurants to choose from on Moorea. Right near the Moorea Pearl Resort, with in walking distance, is a local grocery store. You can stock up on fruit ($8/grape bunch) and bread for a light lunch or breakfast. Moorea also offers Te Honu Iti and Le Cocotier for French cuisine, Alfedo's for Italian and Le Mahogany for Chinese.
Bora Bora offers excellent dining in a unique atmosphere. Bloody Mary's, almost an institution on the island, is a bar and restaurant that has seen many international celebrities walk throught its doors. La Bounty serves excellent pizza and Ta Manuata is famous for its fresh tuna dishes served with vanilla, pineapple or coconut sauces.
Upon my return to Tahiti in April, I will give you a review of Bloody Mary's!

Raiatea…Where legends began and dreams are fulfilled
Second largest island In Polynesia after Tahiti,
Raiatea offers an extraordinary diversity to its visitors: some idyllic motus scattered inside a deep lagoon with an abundance of fishes, some mountains inviting you to discover an untouched exuberant nature, and a hard working and helpful population. The original land of the Maohi people, formerly named Havaiki, Raiatea remains the sacred island for the entire Polynesian Triangle, delimited by , Easter Island and
Hawaii . According to the legend, it is indeed from
Raiatea that the ancient Maohi (Polynesian people) navigators left to conquer other lands in the Pacific. This sacred character is still seen today in the presence of many marae (cult place), of which the famous international marae of Taputapuatea , where in the old days human sacrifices were performed.
Raiatea Hawaiki Nui Hotel … The Maohi Culture Gateway
The Raiatea Hawaiki Nui Hotel is located on the fringe of the lagoon and combines traditional style and modern comfort. Recently fully renovated, each of the 28 rooms is equipped with a mini bar, television, telephone and safety deposit box. The Garden Bungalows have interior lounge areas and the Over Water Bungalows provide spacious terraces with direct access to the lagoon.

I specialize in romantic travel. I found French Polynesia to have incredible scenery and fantastic properties. The first thing I learned was the difference between shallow overwater bungalows and deep overwater bungalows. The shallow ones are in about 3-5 feet of water. Most have sandy bottoms which means not much marine life below them. The shallow water bungalows on Tikehau had a reef under them. I was able to see all sorts of colored fish by taking left over rolls from my meals and throwing bits in the water. I even saw an octopus and shark in these waters. This made it even better to watch the fish from my deck! The deep water bungalows are at the edge of the lagoon. It is where the shallow water dramatically drops off to deeper depths. This is where you will see an abundance of marine life.
I was able to visit Tahiti , Moorea, Taha'a and Bora Bora in the Society Archipelago. I also got to visit Manihi and Tikehau in The Tuamotus. My favorite island is Bora Bora . Although every island was wonderful, Bora Bora had the stunning views and breath taking colors! The Society Archipelago has the more mountainous islands which means more rain and more foliage. The Tuamotus are flat and have less rain with more low lying foliage.
I try to have my clients sample each by visiting both when they go to Tahiti . Although officially called French Polynesia , they are mostly refered to as Tahiti . The islands are half way between California and . It only takes an 8 hour flight from LA to be in paradise.
